Do your Deck boards have sap or goo oozing out of them❓

Image
If your deck boards have a bunch of goo and what looks like sap coming out of them . Your not alone❗   I want you to know that it is called "pitch" - your deck boards have  "pitch".  The goo or " pitch " is usually generically called by most people in my kneck of the woods - "sap".  "Sap" comes from a live tree.  The difference is - "pitch" is the correct terminology to use once the wood is dead.  The reason for this- I did not dig that deep into the subject if I'm being honest ❗šŸ˜ I can however shed some light on why it happens.      Typically premium lumber is sent through a process that solidifies this goo down inside the board and that solidification keeps it from ever coming to the surface .  In fact this is one of the major reasons we treat our lumber.  But just like in every industry and every production process. You will have a few that get through with less than stellar treatment.   If they catch them , maybe

How cracks in your deck can end up causing massive damage ❗

Image
Notice hairline cracks in your decks floor? Or other horizontal surfaces?..........     The good news is this is completely normal, its caused by heat and cold cycles that make the wood move . Expansion and Contraction.  After so much of this movement the wood begins to develop cracks .     The bad news is this can be detrimental to the health of your deck❗    These cracks hold water longer than the other areas of your deck, rain and precipitation gets down in them and sits a bit longer than It does on the surface of the wood and in vertical cracks.    For 99 percent of the cracks on your deck however the sun ☀️ is able to dry the water out just fine. In a adequate amount of time not to cause MILDEW and Rotting.    The Danger lies in a few key areas, let's go over the ways deck cracks can be bad for your decks health. Mats and Rugs and other things that sit on your Deck-     So I often see rugs on Decks. Homeowners lay them down in order to prote

Deck Post Cracks ❗ Resason for Concern❓

Image
Every Year I look at hundreds of decks in the Cincinnati Northern Kentucky area , and I see the same thing on all of the support post.  Vertical Cracks Are they a reason for Concern?  Many of these cracks can be gnarly looking wide and long.  With that being said , myself and other deck experts agree. They are rarely dangerous, and even scarce to cause deck collapse.  Deck post are wide and strong, intact the cracks called (checking) by industry professionals , are factored into the equation before your deck is even built.  We know that these post are going to (check) or crack with the expansion and contraction phases of wood. That's why we use 4x4 and 6x6 and larger post .  It's extremely common , and unless you see the following signs they cause no real concern: Signs a Deck Post Crack needs repaired: Get a long screwdriver or something similiar. - see if you can push it all the way through the crack and all the way through the

Northern Kentucky Painter Restores Wood Bridge over Creek❗

Image
This is a beautiful Wood bridge I restored and painted in 2015. .....    Not a massive structure by any means. Stretching over this small creek presented some challenges.    I would have almost wished the creek was actually deeper so that we could have gotten under it better. Doing repair and painting near the bottom side close to the creek meant getting your head wet...lol.    The grey bridge had PEELING paint in areas, we scraped it down with putty knives and a wire brush in crevices. It had a few planks that the sun had popped loose from expansion and contraction cycles . So we put those back down with proper exterior deck screws.  It was then soft washed with a professional formula to remove mildew growth, dirt and grime.  As far as Restoration went. That's all it really needed... this little bridge is rarely used.  The Painting of this bridge has a interesting fact. ......   This is the last wooden structure that I have painted in Northern Kentucky

Please visit Kong Armor at  www.fb.com/kongarmor before reading this entry.  Proprietor Series is intended to be extra Special Deck Paint Systems Handcrafted by Myself Personally and not my crews or laborers. The very first one is pictured above. And is going on its 10th full day of production.   And no doubt I've lost monetarily on it at this point.  However, I'm hoping that the media content from the project and the overall exceptional quality of the Deck itself will sell more.    1 of 4 Decks Scheduled this year....     What have been the challenges so far?   Time in general.      The Proprietor Series Decks from Kong Armor are supposed to be about ( quality above all else)   There not all necessarily gonna be multi-colored systems like the current one .   Bu
